1. Dripping Springs Natural Area (Dog-Friendly)

Location: Take University Avenue (NM-528) east until it becomes Dripping Springs Road.


Fee: There's a small parking fee of $5 per vehicle, or you can use your annual BLM pass.


Operations Seasons:

-Summer (March-Nov): 7 AM - Sunset

-Winter (Nov-March): 8 AM - Sunset

-Dripping Springs Natural Area is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.


What to Bring:

- Comfortable hiking shoes

- Plenty of water

- Sunscreen and a hat

- Snacks for energy

- Pets are allowed only on designated trails & please leash for your dog (if you bring one)

2. Soledad Canyon Loop Trail (Dog-Friendly)

Location: Drive east on University Avenue (NM-528) to the end, where you'll find the trailhead.


Fee: No entrance fee.


Operation Season: Open year-round.


Activities: The Bar Canyon Trail is open to non-motorized uses, including hiking and horseback riding. It is also used for wildlife viewing.


What to Bring:

- Sturdy hiking boots

- A backpack with essentials

- Binoculars for birdwatching

- Camera to capture the stunning scenery



3. Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (Not Dog-Friendly)

Location: From Las Cruces, head east on Dripping Springs Road for about 4 miles until you reach the monument entrance.


Fee: There's no entrance fee, but consider making a donation to support the preservation of this beautiful area.


What to Bring:

- Good quality hiking gear

- Trekking poles for steep sections

- Maps or GPS for navigation

- First aid kit for safety



Hiking Tips for an Enjoyable Experience:

1. Stay Hydrated: The desert sun can be relentless, so bring plenty of water to keep yourself and your furry friend hydrated.


2. Check the Weather: Las Cruces can get hot, especially in the summer. Check the weather forecast before heading out and avoid hiking during extreme heat.

4. Safety First: Always let someone know your hiking plans and estimated return time. In case of emergencies, bring a fully charged phone and a whistle for signaling.
